About the event
After the cleansing of the Temple the oil supply for the eternal light was only sufficient for one day, but God performed a miracle and it lasted for eight days until new oil could be pressed. This reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world; a light that will never go out!
Interesting facts:
- Holiday foods include latkes (potato cakes) and doughnuts fried in oil. The oil reminds us of the miracle!
- The Hanukkiah is a a nine branch menorah, with one candle acting as the 'servant' candle to light the others. Each day a new candle is lit; one on the first day, two on the second ans so on.
- Perhaps because Hanukkah falls close to Christmas it is traditional to give gifts; one each night as the candle are lit
